fatal error with seemingly innocent file

I get this error: 

Fatal Error at file "XML Data input", line 1, column 13
   Message: Unterminated processing instruction

with this file:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<Math><add>1</add>
         <sub>2</sub>
         <add>3></add>
        <add>5</add>
        <sub>-11</sub>
</Math>

Any ideas? I'm using the DOMParser and have tried different settings for
namespaces/validation so I don't think the problem's there.
