expected: download and building xmlbeans as I've done last time Jan-15th
happend: build failed while busy with download saxon8-1
what I've done: manually downloaded saxon8-3 (as 8-1 was not available), copied to build/lib
happend then: several javac errors
what I've done next: copied saxon8-1 from January download to build/lib
success!

Resolution: Won't Fix
I believe this is as expected. If saxon is available on the local file system, then setting the XMLBEANS_EXTERNALS variable will save you from downloading it when you build.
As far as the supported saxon version, I think 8.1.1 is the only supported version because it supported JDK 1.4 which much of the community uses.

Thank you for reporting that--the build was indeed out of sync with the fact that the jar was renamed. I believe it to be fixed now

Hi, Jacob, thanks for your statement, but I suppose you've got me wrong.
I do not(!!) recommend to use saxon8-3 instead of saxon8-1. If saxon8-1 is fine for xmlBeans one is not supposed to change that.
The only little thing that I'm sure about that is in error is this:
"build.xml" is looking for "saxon8-1.zip" in its target "check.saxon8.jar" at "http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/saxon/saxon8-1.zip". And this seems to me definitely wrong because I could not find the file at that place and got the information that it does not reside there any longer since Feb-11th!
The downside of this error is that anyone with a virgin machin downloading and building from the source is currently not able to do so. As I did they have to dig into the details of saxon versions to get xmlBeans up and running. I do believe that this is not intended.
I would recommend that the professional in charge of build.xml should take saxon from where it reside.
