No, MAC uses the --instance-name argument to the Initialize class which
is why we didn't catch this. I did not add a test case with the fix
because there's static state which would have been a PITA to mock
around. I think a test case for 1.8.1/1.9/2.0 would be great.

I have finally gotten CI running on 5tservers and will let that run for
24hrs or so, but I am still presently -1 on rc1 due to ACCUMULO-4401.

Ugh. Thanks Josh. We don't have a test that exposes that?

4406 is in now as well (but could benefit from someone's eyes -- Dave
said he'll take a look in the morning).

I think we're good for an rc2 now.

Re: [VOTE] Accumulo 1.8.0-rc1

Posted by Josh Elser <jo...@gmail.com>.
I'm looking it 4405 presently. Should have a patch up in a little while,
another set of eyes to look at the problem/solution would be great.

I also sent out an email about log file names [1]. I think it would be
good to make sure everyone is aware of this change (and whether or not
the .out/err files are a bug) before cutting rc2, but that's just my
opinion -- you're welcome to cut rc2 whenever you'd like, Mike :)

Re: [VOTE] Accumulo 1.8.0-rc1

Posted by Michael Wall <mj...@gmail.com>.
This vote fails with 2 -1's. Thanks for the tickets and fixes Josh. I'll
make an RC2 today and start another vote for 5 days. Josh, when do you
expect to have 4405 ready?

Apparently, I never voted -1 explicitly because of ACCUMULO-4401. Oops,
hopefully that was implied.

I have also just filed
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ACCUMULO-4405 which would be good
to get fixed (although, not a blocker -- I can't imagine this is a new bug).

Filed ACCUMULO-4401 to fix, caused by removing "unnecessary code for

Did you provide an instance name when prompted or simply hit enter?

Zing. A couple of things to do tonight but debugging this is on my list.
Curious how ITs are passing... I don't have any clue why it would be
environmental though. Need to repro locally.

That doesn't sound good. We can just put a work around in the release
notes : use 1.7.2 :).

I downloaded the binary tarball and tried to set this up, but I cannot
get `accumulo init` to run. It just keeps prompting me for the instance
name over and over again.

Have I done something dumb?

I would also be in favor of a 5-7 day window. I hope to get some nodes
set up tmrw to run some tests, but I haven't been good at getting stuff
done when I originally tend as of late.

I think this would be a common trend for us on minor/major releases (>72
hr period). FWIW, I would be in favor of making this "standard" going
forward.

Just a heads up that I won't be able to test in that tight of a turn
around. While I'm normally in favor of 72hr windows for maintenance
releases, there's more I'd like to do to put a new minor version
through paces and it'd be nice to have e.g. a week to get through
things.

Michael, can you describe the testing that's been done already on the
RC? Maybe my concerns are already covered. I don't see any in-progress
release notes thus far.

Extending the vote duration during the vote is usually bad form, as it can
appear questionable, like you're only extending in order to achieve a
desired result.

In general, it would be better to explicitly cancel it, and issue a new one
with a new duration. Or, just let it play out, and issue a new one if it
fails (more -1s than +1s, or insufficient +1s).

Personally, I'm in favor of the latter... let it play out. If people get a
chance to test and vote, then great, there's nothing to worry about. If
people don't get a chance to test to their satisfaction, and not enough
people vote, then it won't pass. But others could test and +1 without them,
and it could still pass, and that's fine.

Since nobody has voted yet, you *could* extend it without the appearance of
impropriety, but personally I think it's better to just let it play out
rather than prematurely conclude not enough people will be able to test to
their satisfaction and vote.

As for the concern about making it standard for some releases being longer,
to account for more testing time.... I'm not a fan of that... it would be
better if folks got involved and did testing *prior* to voting. Extending
the voting period to account for last-minute testing from otherwise
inactive (or, at least, not-routinely-testing) developers does not seem to
me to be a good idea, because it seems to encourage an overall lack of
participation, except to weigh in and hold up things at the last minute.
I'm not implying that we have developers doing this... but I just wouldn't
want to encourage that sort of thing.

I can do that. Since it is my first release, I was hoping to at least get
some verification the artifacts were good and that I didn't screw up the
release process. I wasn't planning on canceling the release, just letting
it expire on Sun and creating a new vote. But I am happy to do whatever
makes the most sense.

Re: [VOTE] Accumulo 1.8.0-rc1

Posted by Josh Elser <jo...@gmail.com>.
IMO, you don't need to cancel this RC if there is agreement to extend
the timeframe and there isn't anything found that needs to be fixed
(avoiding referencing -1's because release votes are majority --
Accumulo is different in that we often treat release votes as consensus).

Making the vote longer is fine without re-casting it, making it shorter
(but not shorter than 72hrs) would be bad thing to do.

Re: [VOTE] Accumulo 1.8.0-rc1

Posted by Michael Wall <mj...@gmail.com>.
Understood on the time frame. I am planning to update the releasing docs,
I'll make a note that minor releases should have more time.

If we don't get any -1s before this vote closes, I'll start a new vote on
Mon for longer with the same RC. If we do get -1s, I'll fix whatever if
needed, make new a RC and start a longer vote.

In terms of testing, we did the work on the IT's and saw them all pass at
least one. Keith also did some upgrade testing on EC2. I don't know
anything else.

Lastly, I work on getting a draft of the release notes for the next vote.

Re: [VOTE] Accumulo 1.8.0-rc1

Posted by Keith Turner <ke...@deenlo.com>.
I would also like to run some long running test on EC2. I probably
not be able to get to that until Mon morning.
