[Bug 122426] New: 'Autosave' on Windows 8 machine

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122426

            Bug ID: 122426
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: 'Autosave' on Windows 8 machine
           Product: General
           Version: AOO 3.4.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 8
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: major
          Priority: P3
         Component: ui
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: grmccormack@googlemail.com
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

At work I use Open Office sitting on a Win8 - 64 bit machine ( a Dell ) AND I
have noticed that every so often the Windows Explorer locks up - the only
solution is to bring up the Task Manager and stop the Windows Explorer(s) that
are causing the issue. I think it is to do with the Autosave function - when
Windows Explorer is looking at the directory in which the file resides.

Once the Windows Explorer has been stopped using the Task manager - I can
re-open another Windows Explorer session and continue as before EXCEPT that
when it comes to powering down the machine at the end of the day - if I have
been using Open Office and had the issue - then the system ignores the shutdown
request - and although all the other windows are closed - it remains defiantly
refusing to shutdown.

I can continue to look into the issue - but I thought it a big enough issue to
raise with you immediately - so that you get thinking; whilst I hone the
specifics of the problem and make sure that it is an issue relating to the
Autosave function - rather than any other use of the Clipboard for example. ( I
will continue using Open Office without the Auto-save function enabled ) and
make sure that during my otherwise normal use of the system that nothing
un-toward happens.

regards

Greg McCormack - Liverpool , UK

Ladies and Gentlemen, this bug report appears to be a variation of something
possibly serious issue, which impacts more distributions and more versions of
Open Office / Libre Office. In Windows 8 file explorer is freezing when
OpenOffice is active. For me specially this freezing status gets released when
I normally close LibreOffice.

The report is currently unconfirmed, please check

http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=58872

this forum topic, all users seem to suffer from similar issues, the posts there
may confirm both the existence and severity of the Win8 - OpenOffice
incompatibility.

It would be good to know whether the Explorer and shutdown issues go away when
you have autosave disabled.

Another possibility is an interaction with anti-virus or some other program
that might be accessing the autosave files.

In bug 122752 another bug in the interaction of Windows 8 File Explorer and
Apache OpenOffice was observed and fixed. It would be interesting to know
whether the fix there solves the problem reported here too. If anyone was able
to reproduce the problem before please check with the just released Apache
OpenOffice 4.0.0 (http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html)

I am sorry to report that - I stopped using Open Office for the last few days
and the system didn't hang once - I then re-started using OpenOffice ( scalc )
today - I had already turned off the AutoSave functionality and I think the
hanging co-incided with me saving the file to the harddisk - half an hour later
and the little circular thing is still spinning ( on both the Windows Explorer
that I had open at the time ).

I have Kaspersky Endpoint Security version 10 - but as I said originally
:= It is only an issue with Open Office ...

These are the other progams that I have running ( with no problems ) :-
JARTE , MS OFFICE , SHREW SOFT VPN CLIENT , VMWARE Virtual Player

I am seeing the same issue. Suddenly I cannot open new files, Writer is simply
not showing up. There are multiple application instances in Task Manager. As
soon as I close all of them I can open new files again. It seems that all
instances are waiting for something.

Thanks for checking with the AOO 4.0.0 release. Seeing it fixed there but not
with its AOO400rc1 predecessor indicates that the root cause was the same as
issue 122752.
