Just for the record here:  I am working on the general solution to this by implementing the methods in TextInput, TextArea and TextPane to interact with Input Method Editors.  This is non-trivial, but required for our application to be used in the Japanese market.  I'm *hoping* this effort will fix this problem, but it might not (assuming the real issue here is only reacting to keyPress and keyRelease events and not character events, which is a much simpler problem and not at all related to Input Method Editors.
