Tomcat and "JDK Compatibility"

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

All,

The Tomcat documentation says somewhat tangentially that Tomcat
requires a JDK (instead of a JRE). I believe this has not been true
for quite some time.

Check the very first "requirement" for installation on these pages:

http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/appdev/installation.html
http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-7.0-doc/appdev/installation.html

Is there any reason not to change "JDK" to "JRE" (and probably mention
that a JDK in fact contains a JRE)?

Thanks,
- -chris

Clarify away.

Surely a (simple) web application can be developed without a JDK,
right? If you work entirely in JSP (a nightmare scenario IMO), then
you don't need a JDK.

I'm asking because these pages (specifically) have been used to
justify the rumor that Tomcat requires (or even prefers) the JDK to
the JRE. Honestly, when I read it, I was surprised to see that it said
JDK even though that page is, as you say, just for application
development. It's obvious to me that, though the page mentions CVS, it
is certainly not required to develop (nor deploy) web applications for
use on Tomcat. The same can be said for JDK versus JRE.

Do you think there would be any objections to clarifying this point on
that page? I'd be happy to provide a documentation patch.

Yes. That is the application development section for which a JDK is
required.
