Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Jonathan Gallimore <jo...@gmail.com>.
Alexandre, do you have any thoughts?

All, Just a quick note - I'm very happy to re-roll as many times as needed
(I'm just happy to be doing a 7.0.5 release), but please do be mindful that
it takes something like 4-6 hours each time, so knowing anything that needs
changing _before_ I start is appreciated. Once the [VOTE] thread hits the
list, a considerable amount of time has gone in already.

I'd prefer to invest that time on things like:

* Fixing the opensaml issue
* Fixing the security manager for EAR deployment issue
* Looking at the JACC issue reported recently
* Java 10 and Java 11 support
* Watching England in the world cup :-)

Alex originally asked for the Tomcat 8.5.32 so I'd like to get his view on
using 8.5.31. For reference, the changelog is here:
https://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-8.5-doc/changelog.html#Tomcat_8.5.32_(markt).
For users using the CORSFilter, please note CVE-2018-8014. This can be
mitigated by configuring the filter correctly.

Cheers

Jon

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Romain Manni-Bucau <rm...@gmail.com>.
+1 release is now ok (thanks Jon) and time we workaround the new tomcat
behavior or tomcat reverts this regression we would have a release usable
by users having abandonned direct JNDI (which is most of our users now).
Hopefully we'll include the opensaml fix with this jndi fix next time.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Jean-Louis Monteiro <jl...@tomitribe.com>.
Last release was June 26th or so. So it gives us still a solid 3 or 4 weeks
ahead.
So either we downgrade and we re-roll
Or we let it go and we re-roll in few weeks from now.

Second option would allow for incorporating additional user feedback along
side with the Tomcat upgrade.

Awesome, thank you all for the feedback. We'll leave the vote as is, and I
am happy to roll 7.0.6 with the next Tomcat version and the fixes discussed
next month. I think that's a nice target to aim for to improve our release
cadence.

Still running. From my perspective, there is some conclusion as to whether
+1's were actual votes, or agreeing with something someone said. If folks
could reply to the original post with their +1 / 0 / -1 (with reason for
voting -1), that would be much appreciated.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Mark Struberg <st...@yahoo.de.INVALID>.
Got word from one of the authors. It's all ALv2 indeed https://swagger.io/license/
But they have certainly some work to do to make this more clear.

So I'm reverting my -1.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Thiago Veronezi <th...@veronezi.org>.
Hi tx Mark!

Yeah, the problem is not much the swagger thing, but more the injection of
the Application object.
Swagger was just on use case that I was working on for this potential user,
so I thought it would be great to have it in our examples.

>> Imo it's an absolute showstopper to use swagger in ANY project - not in
OSS, and even less so in commercial projects!

Good to know! I will bring that up next time this comes around in our (new
user and I) discussions. tx!

[]s,
Thiago.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Mark Struberg <st...@yahoo.de.INVALID>.
-1 (binding) for adding that swagger-api.

I did download the jar and it's sources and there are tons of classes with no license header.
The jar has no license info in it's manifest, contains no LICENSE, no NOTICE, etc.

What the fiddlesticks ^^
Can someone else please take a look at those jars?
Imo it's an absolute showstopper to use swagger in ANY project - not in OSS, and even less so in commercial projects!

Again: please also review it and point me to the license files.

I'm ok with it, no need to apologize to me. I'd push back if there wasn't a
patch :). If folks are happy to re-review and retest, I'm ok to re-roll.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Thiago Veronezi <th...@veronezi.org>.
I know. :/ Sorry. Thats why my 0. That only happens when you do something
like this...

@Context
Application app;

... which is what the swagger folks do.
https://github.com/swagger-api/swagger-core/blob/2.0/modules/swagger-jaxrs2/src/main/java/io/swagger/v3/jaxrs2/integration/resources/AcceptHeaderOpenApiResource.java

I don't think we do that very often, so 0; Although, this would help me a
lot on selling TomEE to a current potential user... but that's my problem.
:)

Thiago.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Jonathan Gallimore <jo...@gmail.com>.
Thanks for the patch and the review!

I'll defer to the community on this one. I'm ok to re-roll, but will point
out we're 10 days since the first roll, and we'd be resetting the counter
again.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Thiago Veronezi <th...@veronezi.org>.
Hi guys,

Sorry for being late. I had other things to care lately. I've finally got
time for this. I hope it's not too late, or not too bad of a problem.
I've got a NPE when creating a swagger example. It's very simple to
reproduce. Simply create a jaxrs application and include...

    <dependency>
      <groupId>io.swagger.core.v3</groupId>
      <artifactId>swagger-jaxrs2</artifactId>
      <version>2.0.1</version>
    </dependency>

This is supposed to give you the /openapi.json and /openapi.yaml endpoints.
In our case it gives NPE. I've created this PR which fixes it and adds the
swagger example.

My vote is 0 if you find it's OK to have this until next version. If there
is another way to fix/workaround this without code change, that would be
even better.

Hello,

Yes Thank you very much Jon for the great TomEE release work!
I confirm what you wrote.
Better release 7.0.5 with everything that works.
Hope to see later a 7.0.6 supporting Java 11 !

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Jonathan Gallimore <jo...@gmail.com>.
I currently have:

1 +1 for the release as it is (Romain)
3 requests for a release with Tomcat 8.5.31 (Gurkan, Felipe, and Alex (Alex
replied to me directly))

Is anyone -1 for a TomEE 7.0.5 release built on Tomcat 8.5.31? Please speak
up now if you do object so we can talk about it more on the list here. From
my own perspective, I'm ok with the release as it is, and I'd also +1 a
7.0.5 release with Tomcat 8.5.31 provided it didn't have other issues.

I'll look to re-roll the release again later today, unless someone objects.

Many thanks everyone.

Jon

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Felipe Jaekel <fk...@gmail.com>.
Hi,

I use openejb: to reference datasources in my persistence.xml files. If
Tomcat 8.5.32 breaks that, I prefer having TomEE 7.0.5 with Tomcat 8.5.31.

Thanks

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by Gurkan Erdogdu <cg...@gmail.com>.
Hi Jon
Thanks for initiating this.
I opened a bug in Tomcat regarding java:/ namespace and it will be
corrected in 8.5.33 and upper versions. If we distribute the TomEE with
8.5.32, it will be a problem for users who uses lookups with openejb. So,
for this release we can stick to 8.5.31. WDYT?
Regards.

+1 [VOTE]

i did have a problem with xalan and  java.lang.ClassCastException:
org.apache.xml.dtm.ref.DTMManagerDefault cannot be cast to
org.apache.xml.dtm.DTMManager

but using fop 2.3 and excluding the jars seems to be working

and upgrade the plugin version for the embedded flavor

(don't forget the repository and pluginRespotory pointing on the staging)

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 7.0.5 (round 2)

Posted by gilbertoca <gi...@gmail.com>.

tomee-embedded-maven-plugin?

We develop with tomee-embedded-maven-plugin and create/deploy a jar with
tomee-maven-plugin.

Regards,
Gilberto
