[PROPOSAL] Apache OpenOffice Conference 2012

We have the opportunity to frame up and build a 'conference within a
conference' within the ApacheCON EU 2012 venue, November 5 - 9th in
Sinsheim, Germany. I've pulled an outline together on the wiki [1].

This is a 'call-to-action'. If you want to see this idea become a reality,
now is the time to volunteer.

Timing is urgent here. In the northern hemisphere, many of us will go off
on vacations in July and August. We need to earn our space from ConComm and
the other ApacheCon volunteers if this idea has any hope of success. Note
that if you volunteer for this effort, you will also need to help out with
the broader conference as well. Share and share alike!

I have asked that we sharpen our proposal and submit it to ConComm by
Friday, June 22nd... in two weeks time. Yes, that's compressed, but I
believe we have sufficiently experienced PPMC members who know what it
takes to make something like this happen. I've started a proposed committee
list on the wiki, but that's all it is a 'start'.

This is a great opportunity to re-boot our OpenOffice community in its
country of origin. I'm personally very excited about this, and hope you are
too. Please engage and make this happen.

You can count me in for the CFP jury too: I reviewed papers for the last
couple of OOoCon editions, focusing on submissions related to Quality
Assurance and Localization, and I can do the same this year.

Thanks Wolf. I think advising on how to shape the tracks,
reviewing/selecting papers submitted via the CFP are good ways to help.

Much appreciated.

After I setted the Java enviroment like this:menu->Tools->Options->OpenOffice->Java,seleted the Sun Microsystems Inc(Version 1.6.0_07),it does not work.
But I find the previous version of openoffice can work.

Thanks Tsutomu. I can reproduce it on both OO3.4 beta and AOO 3.4. This
should be issue 118057, caused by CWS sw34bf03 as mentioned in that issue.
The orignal patch in it can fix this issue but the patch has two little
format problems. So I attached a new one. Verified on my PC, with that
patch, both MS Word 2003 XML import and export filter can work.

I got the same error on Xubuntu 32bit. But XHTML filter works.
I found these issues for Word 2003 XML filter on 3.4:

hello everyone:

Now I am merging the UOF v2.0 source code to the Aoo3.4.
But I have found that Aoo340(Build 9588)-new can not save as the XML format, such as the Microsoft Word 2003 XML.Could anybody tell me why it is deleted?
The UOF v2.0 source code is based on the XML format. So it will take some time to complete the work.

Thanks for the advice. I've been scratching my head wondering how/when
ConComm was going to be more clear about the over-arching conference plan.
Our planning process will be focused on the wiki outline, improving it and
making it much more actionable.

Other more informal sessions can include Hackathons on the Monday and Tuesday before the main conference.

Also, there are more informal "Fast Feather" sessions where people present current projects and ideas.

If I have clearance to go, I've been thinking about a related CFP or Fast Feather discussing a PDF to PowerPoint processor that we've built at work using PDFBox and POI.

If I am there I'd discuss the CMS.

+1

I've taken the lack of concrete action by ConCom up on the core concom
list. In the meantime I strongly encourage this project to get
planning. The ConCom team will just have to do its best to accomodate
what this project plans. To minimise the surprises there needs to be
constant feedback from here to the discuss list even if that hits dead
silence over there.

I'm happy to mediate any issues that arise because of my encouraging
you to progress local planning.

Thanks Roberto. I haven't forgotten about this topic(!) ... the ApacheCon
Discuss list has been moving in fits and starts. If you read the May and
June emails from the archive
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-apachecon-discuss/, you will
understand what I mean.

This is why I think we, the PPMC, needs to take the lead on what we want to
do. I proposed an outline for what that might look like in the wiki.

Rob had some good additional commentary on how our project 'ConComm' could
take the next step. I'll frame up a new page on the wiki along the lines
Rob is proposing. What we will need to do is agree on the templates and
begin the planning work in earnest. Summer holidays will add some more
challenges so let's get this moving now.

As soon as we'll start to promote the event we might customize the
Apache OpenOffice displayed in the SourceForge top carousel (see
http://sourceforge.net/directory) to inform our audience about the
event.

How do you like the idea?

+1

Although it may help to understand what other Apache Developers have
come to expect (not that this should limit you).

It's about meeting people you work with on open source projects. It's
about learning how to work more effectively with them. It's about
finding new people and new collaboration opportunities. It's learning
other projects. it's about building community both within and beyond
your projects. It's about communicating to potential contributors why
they should care and how they can engage.

So, as Don says, anything goes, at least at this stage of planning.

To be honest, it is our to make it be what we envision. There are no
'rules' per se. If you have a great idea for a session, then propose it.
I'm still looking for a signal on how to proceed with the CFP process. In
the meantime, we are advised to plan, plan, and more plan...in other words,
assume we have full control over what we want to do for now at least. A
good plan will trump no plan or a lousy plan on any given day.

And now we know from http://www.apachecon.eu/ that admission will be 450
EUR (i.e., in the range of 550 USD) and that apparently partial
registrations (OpenOffice track only) are not allowed.

Especially considering that the regular ticket price will be "a few
hundred Euros [or USD]" more expensive, as the page says, this will be a
significant change for most people used to attend OOoCon. So far,
admission to OOoCon had been in the 0 EUR - 10 EUR (0-15 USD) range.

This is not something bad in itself, and of course there are open source
conferences that are more expensive than this one, but it would have
been good to know it in advance, since it is a major difference with
respect to the past. (Yes, I know that committers receive a discount and
that travel assistance may be requested, but I'm speaking in general).

   Andrea.

This is a great idea. I just wonder whether the venue is really the one
shown in http://s.apache.org/4cp (which seems very much like a
football/soccer stadium) or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAP_Arena (not
very distant from it). In any case, the venue dwarfs any previous OOoCon
venues.

I would just add, if needed, the conference fees/admission.
Historically, the OOoCon has been free to attend (or almost free, with a
nominal fee, say 10 Euros, to avoid fake registrations). Does it work
the same for ApacheCon? If it doesn't, it might complicate the
"conference within a conference" model a bit since the proposal would
have to discuss the possibility of allowing partial registrations.

   Andrea.

So reading your wiki page, it sounds like need to come up with
proposal for the Apache Conference Committee (ConComm). Assuming
there is no template for the proposal that we can just copy, what do
we think the proposal should include? It might make sense to outline
the proposal, maybe on the wiki (or via email) and discuss and fill in
the blanks.

A proposal might cover:

Name
Duration
Intended audience -- project, broader Apache, broader eco system
Resources needed (how many rooms, etc.)
Budget, including anticipated expenses and how they will met.
Planning schedule, including dates for registration, Call for Papers, etc.
Rough outline of conference schedule
List of volunteers

Is that the idea? Or do you see the proposal as taking some other
form, or covering other information?

Re: [PROPOSAL] Apache OpenOffice Conference 2012

Posted by Donald Harbison <dp...@gmail.com>.
Forgive the top posting... I am just alerting everyone that I have updated
the planning wiki [1] today with the latest proposal content, conference
information and work items. We need volunteers, your attention and action.
Please take the time to read up, and respond back on this thread with
questions and discussion.

If you decide to volunteer, please identify yourself and the aspect of the
project you are most interested to help with.

Thanks!

Looks like this thread didn't continue. Maybe because other topics that
started a bit later were interfering.

It's very unlike that I will be able to attend in person, but you can
count me in if you need reviewers for the call for papers.
