image opacity and pdf compression

Hi,

I would like to know if there is a way to add images with reduced
opacity into a pdf.

Also, can a pdf be optimized/compressed?

Not using XSL-FO. If you wrap the image in SVG, then it's possible.

Not with FOP. You have to post-process the PDF. Tools are found here:
http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/resources.html#products-pdf
