SVN working checkout overhead
I have a question regarding the overhead in the .svn directories/files
that are created.
A branch current has about 390+ revisions, so far.
Rev 2 is where I created the branch fro the main trunk. There are 475 code
directories, and therefore 475 .svn directories. The non-compiled
checkout is 459035 kB. Remove all of the .svn directories and the size
drops to 219127 kB. Wow. The latest revision is 595119 kB and without
the .svn stuff it is 353226 kB. From start to current, the code base
changed 134099 kB. With svn the size changed 136084 kB. The svn overhead
increased 1985 kB, which really isn't bad.
The question, why is the overhead so large, i.e., about 239908 kB for 475
code directories? Is there some option to reduce the overhead in the
local.svn file structure so that it relies more on the repository for
info?

Thanks. That is kinda what we thought yesterday when discussing this,
figuring that it had something to do with the ability to work "off-line."

Look in the .svn/ dirs. There are cached 'pristine' copies of every
file. It's a deliberate design which allows you to 'svn diff', 'svn
revert' without hitting the network. It also allows you the client to
send diffs when committing. No, it's not configurable; no, you can't
make those caches go away.
