Powering Cocoon

For various, complex transformations going on, cocoon could use some
horsepower behind it.  I heard awhile back that Java on Linux (x86) doesn't
spread across multiple processors.  Is this still true?  Does Cocoon
take advantage of threads and does it SMP?  Thanks.
