Think oil changes on a car. How many know *why* they're supposed to change
oil? It's just a mantra that dealers and their driving teachers tell them
to do, or the car stops running. Computers are not TV's, just like cars are
not TV's. They all operate with different maintenance regimes.

Version control is a kind of backup, and backup is a kind of insurance.
Most people understand insurance. They just are willing to accept different
amounts of risk versus cost. Insurance/backup/Subversion is a cost.

No, because the computer runs on a battery.
And the computer always reserves enough battery power to execute a clean shutdown.
I believe they should make desktop computers with a 3 minute rechargeable
battery for this same reason.

If a power outage happens, everything is lost. So the UPS people get rich
selling $200 UPSes. Which no regular user thinks they need to buy, until a power
outage occurs and their data gets lost as a result.

The home computer should be seen as an appliance.
All home-user computers should come with the option of putting in a rechargeable
battery with just enough power to shutdown the computer should the power go out
-- or the power cord be pulled out as you said.

But people who do that will then be surprised that things break when
they pull the power plug instead of pressing the button.

Well, they can. Using FC6.

I have fedora core 6 install on my DELL laptop.
When I press the power button (to turn off the computer) the screen turns black
and eventually turns off.
What is happening in the background (which you can see if you press a key like
[control]) is that the fc6 linux OS is shutting itself down gracefully.

So yes, you can just press the power button on the computer to turn if off just
like you would a TV.
Just make sure you use Linux.

not all computers need to be "shutdown"
the rusty old Amiga was just happy as pie to be turned off with a
power switch with no ill effects to anything. :-) If I recall BeOS was
just a happy being turned off when you were done. Then again my Macs
run for MONTHS without needing to be turned completely off or
rebooted. My Windows machine is pretty much just for games and it
stays turned off most of the time anyway. :-)

just because Windows has stupid dogma requirements doesn't mean ALL
computers need the same.
