Hey, I'm closing this bug report because I solved the problem.

Turns out that I needed to install GNU coreutils, because the AIX version of
the "install" program was not working.

So whenever I ran "make install", it used the AIX version of "install". I
needed to get the GNU Coreutils version of "install".

After getting that, the "make install" finished successfully.
