If someone wants to clean this up in the templates, that'd be great, but I wouldn't hold up a release over it, since it doesn't affect performance or functionality.

As best I can tell, most if not all of the spurious newlines in template output have been resolved as of Struts 2.0.8.
See here for the latest version of expected output from one of the tests for the <s:textfield> tag:

The spurious newlines seem to be removed in all of the test output files I looked through. I'm going to close this ticket as fixed. If you know of a specific tag or use of a tag that is still generating spurious newlines, please re-open this ticket with detailed information (e.g., tag, usage example of tag, etc.)
