And this wouldn't work ?
    public long end()
        throws IOException {
        if (compressionStream == null) {
            compressionStream = new GZIPOutputStream(fakeOutputStream);
        }
        compressionStream.finish();
        compressionStream.close(); // frees the deflater memory!
        return ((OutputFilter) buffer).end();
    }
