symbol shortcut?
Hi there. I've been hoping OpenOffice adds the feature of creating
keystroke shortcuts for special characters to be inserted, rather than
using the menu to insert special characters. On my old versions of
Office, I could create a keystroke combination to associate with a
particular symbol, because I used the symbol so much. I can't access
the functionality on the current version of Office that I have, but I
downloaded OpenOffice specifically to have access to this feature,
because I assumed it was part of the program. It would be a really
useful feature!

A couple of suggestions in addition to those already provided:
o Type something that is otherwise unlikely to appear in your
documents, e.g. #a, #b, etc. After you have completed your basic
typing, simply search for and replace these tokens with the required
special characters.
o Use AutoText. Insert the character once into a document and select
it. Go to Edit | AutoText... . Select a category. Choose a name
and a shortcut (which can be as short as a single character). Go to
AutoText | New (text only).
To insert the character, type the shortcut and press F3. This has
the problem (already mentioned in another context) that the shortcut
needs to be separated from previous text by punctuation or a space,
so the character cannot be buried in a word.
An alternative way to invoke AutoText is to use the Insert toolbar
(View | Toolbars > | Insert). Now you can click the AutoText button
or - better still - click the down-arrow next to the AutoText button
and navigate directly to your shortcut. This technique has the
advantage that you *can* use it to insert your special character within a word.
Unfortunately, AutoText items appear always to end with a paragraph
break; I don't see any way to avoid this. So in general you will
still need to type Backspace or to reposition the cursor
(left-arrow?) after inserting your character.

I cannot imagine that you would get this far without the
functionality being available. Are you perhaps trying to enter the
shortcut into the Keys window? No, you don't do that. As stated,
you select from the list in the "Shortcut keys" window. Scroll down
the (extensive) list as necessary.

Is this still an issue with the new OpenOffice 4.1 on Mac? In Writer, do
you see underlined letters in the main menu, like the "F" in File and
the "E" in Edit? And aren't you able to use (the Mac equivalent of)
Alt+F, Alt+E... to open the menus?

Mnemonics (and their existence) are language-dependent. Are you using
OpenOffice in English or in other languages?

I fail to see how removing functionality is an ‘enhancement’. In any case, the underscores and shortcuts are familiar to those of us who use more than one platform, and provide a more consistent cross platform experience.
I do not have much patience with the purists who seem to think that if it’s a Mac, you need to point and click rather than use a keyboard shortcut! Could you enable the shortcuts and allow an option for the underscores to be visible or not?

this is by design: it was disabled on Mac OS X in 2007 since it seemed
odd on a Mac. If Mac OS X users want to change it back, it can probably
be done.

NO - and that's the issue - it did work that way in OS2 (and probably win doze). Alt (which is the option key on a mac) doesn't bring up any of the menubar items.

I can't speak for the Mac, but Alt+I, U, F gets there for me. Does
this not work (perhaps using Option) on a Mac? If you press Option,
don't the relevant letters appear underlined in the menus?
In any case, you can set your own keyboard shortcut.
o Go to Tools | Customize... | Keyboard (or wherever that is on a Mac).
o At the top right, select OpenOffice or Writer (or whatever).
o Under Functions | Category, select Insert.
o Under Function, select From File.
o Under "Shortcut keys", choose your preferred shortcut.
o Click Modify and OK.

The Insert Picture from File is just one click away if you have selected
View --> Toolbars --> Insert.
Personally I like the Insert Special Characters in the Sidebar like we
have the Text Properties.
Even better to have the ability to drag Toolbars into the Sidebar making
the Sidebar customizable to your own needs.

Yes, but in addition a lot more keyboard shortcuts would be very welcome. For instance Insert - Picture - From File requires a lot of mousing (this is on a Mac). No shortcuts are shown for any of the steps.

I agree with Tracey. There are times where you need to use a special symbol

In Linux, you can add a Compose key--right-ALT--is good, or right
WINDOWS if your keyboard has winkeys. In Windows, there are a number of
programs that do the same thing. With the Compose key, you can get all
the diacritics for western European languages, the various
currency symbols €, ¢ ¥ £ á é ç ä ö ü ß and some fractions like ½ ⅓ ⅞
and a batch of other things. The Compose key operates by
first striking Compose key, then two other keys that will make the
character. Most of the combinations are obvious. For Windows,
Google AllChars, WinCompose, FreeCompose, and others. I think this is
the simplest way to get almost any character you might need.
There are more thorough and complicated ways, but look at this first.

You forgot one. Use the appropriate keyboard layout. It's easy to add
and even switch among different layouts. Many special characters, such
as the Euro (€), are included in the U.S. International layout. I just
used it the previous sentence. You can make the U.S. International
layout your only one or install more than one and use <Ctrl>+<Shift> to
switch.

there are at least three options:
(1) assign an autocorrect combination to your special character, such as _E for euro sign. however, you will have to precede and succeed it with whitespace characters, which is not always convenient: e. g., when you want to insert an 'a umlaut' instead of 'a' to the german word 'bar' (bear) by using :a as a shortcut, you have to type 'b<space>:a<space><backspace><left arrow><backspace><right arrow>r', which is quite long.
(2) record a macro (tools -> macros -> record macro, then insert a character through the dialogue, stop recording and save the macro) and assign a shortcut to it (tools -> customise -> keyboard, choose a key combination and find your macro in the list of categories under 'openoffice.org macros -> user').
