Thoughts on a 1 week countdown for POI 3.11 final?

Hi All

It has been a few weeks since 3.11 beta 3 was released now. We've had a
couple of issues with that reported, all now fixed, and I think we're in a
good state for a release!

So, what do people think about giving it a week for any last remaining bug
fixes + applying outstanding patches, then rolling 3.11 final? That would
see us release around the 15th of December.

Otherwise, we could do a beta 4 then, allow people the Christmas break to
apply some patches and fix some bugs, and release 3.11 final just after
New Year.

(We do have a few community contributed patches / fixes / enhancements not
yet applied, which it would be good to get in if people have time!)

What do people think? 1 week's time? Or the start of January?

Nick

There is one regression in the beta3 that has been introduced by the
optimization in XMLBeans usage (#56854):
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=57250

Any chance it will be fixed in the final version?

Great! Unless anyone (committer or community) can spot any other
regressions between now and then, I'll aim to build the release candidate
and start the vote on Monday!

As the regression (#57250) and a signature bug is now fixed, I'm +1 for a
final.

Some of those look moderately large, and maybe in need of more testing
before we formally release them. Any thoughts on 3.11 final in January, vs
3.11 with just the fix in a week then 3.12 before ApacheCon North America,
eg late March?

Hi Nick,

I have currently 3 patches in the pipeline:
- a fix to be done: in signature support for MS Office 2007 which generates line breaks in the rels files, which need to be ignored on signing validation
  (this was messaged privately ...)
- new feature: rc4 binary encryption, which was already finished (#57195), but comes now with changes for point 3
- new feature: cryptoapi support for hslf, hopefully finished next week
When I get example files for the other formats, I would try to implement them too, i.e. cryptoapi is format-dependent

So I would prefer start of January.

No more Beta4 please, let's do it final.
Please put any outstanding issue in 3.12.beta

We are eagerly waiting for the final version for some time, so that we can integrate and deploy our project in our production environment.
We cannot deploy Beta version in prod env.

Thanks,

+1 for the short option of 1 week's time, there will likely always be
patches pending, having no major regression reported is imho a sign
that it is a good time to release.
