Renderer for RTF & AFP
Hallo,
Has someone written or try to write a renderer for AFP or RTF?
It should be done out of the XSL:FO-Standard. Besides PDF (which is
working fine) these formats are quite often requested. RTF has been
announced as beeing integrated soon. How soon?

That's the one on your CV, right? :-)

In people's minds: AFP = IBM = worth a lot of money. :-)

That's what I imagine. I may be able to get resources for working on an
AFP renderer once there is something started as OS.

Just what I suspected. So it sounds like a nice little challenge. Any
takers?

We tried that also.
Instead I ended up writing it myself.

We have a closed source version that they have no intention of
releasing.
Now everyone can have there own closed source version.
I guess it is one of those formats stuck in the dark ages.

Our AFP renderer is not complete for example it does not do images.
I cannot promise anything at all but I could imagine that if someone
managed to get something open source it would encourage others.

If you like working with binary and pouring through hex code then this
is the format for you. Otherwise it is ugly and painful.
The specs are nice and confusing too.

Hallo Kurt
You've read from Bertrand about the RTF renderer.
Concerning the AFP renderer: I think there are at least two
implementations of an AFP renderer for FOP but both are closed-source.
Last September I've tried to get the at the code for the AFP renderer
that was started at UBS, after that project was canceled. No success.
We at Outline still think about creating an AFP renderer because a lot
of our customers work with it at the moment. Currently we're working
with a PDF/PostScript combination. Last time we talked about it
management would also want to have a closed-source AFP implementation.
That's bad news, but I'm still working on it.
I wonder how many people would be interested in an AFP renderer.
Hopefully there would be people/companies willing to contribute to such
a component.
I don't know anything about AFP right now, but I can't be much more
difficult than the PostScript renderer I started last year. And that
wasn't difficult at all. I've just heard about AFP that the specs change
rather often. I don't know how much truth there's to it.

We're expecting a contribution in this area in a week or two, but this will
go into the redesign code base first, so it will take some time before
actually being released.
In the meantime you can use jfor (www.jfor.org) to generate RTF from XSL-FO.
Not complete but usable with some workarounds depending on the desired output.
