process-sources

Hi,

I'd like to use Maven for applying modifications to the source code  
before compiling
it. I've seen that Maven provides the life cycle phase 'process- 
sources'. Is it meant for
things like that? If so, how can I use it? Does anybody have an  
example for replacing
Strings in the source files?
