new commer question: how xindice work

Hi,
I just came across this project.

can any one let me know how it stores xml itself. what


i mean is it some sort of database in which it is
stored permanentsly or only during the runtime after
which it disapears.

is the memory it uses to store xml data is less or
more than if we just store these xml as DOM? 
i would like to know because now i same all my xml
data as DOM and addition, deletion and modification of
any node is done in this DOM document. 

i would certainly be interested to switch to xindice
if it is more efficient with respect to performance, 
memory consumption, and ease of use.
