May board report

Hi all,

Here's a draft of the board report for May.

I'd appreciate comments / edits / etc...

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/2013-05+Board+Report+for+Apache+CloudStack

I will be providing the report to the board on Tuesday the 7th, so get
your comments in soon please!

Most importantly to get the most out of nested hypervisors, you need 2 things:

1.) A processor that can handle EPT, or 'pDMA'

2.) A hypervisor that can passthrough a cpu using EPT(pDMA) <- this is needed to achieve hardware assisted virtualization(HAV) in the tier 1 guest. It is possible to nest with Para-Virtualization but you should not expect any form of 'usable' tier 2 guest instances. The overhead on the CPU by that point without pDMA is insane. When modeling something as complex as a cloud using nested virtualization, you really want HAV.

Xen runs pretty well in Para-Virt mode, I'll give it that.

Actually DevCloud is XCP and not Citrix XenServer.

If someone intended to try out XS 6.1, Soheil's solution should work very
nicely.

Although, it should work on Virtual Box as well.

We run XenServer using it. That's how the VirtualBox version of
DevCloud works actually...

If you've gotten something working in Fusion, it would be worth putting
that on the wiki for folks who aren't a fan of VirtualBox. (Or folks who
already use Fusion and don't want to run two desktop virt. products...)

Virtualbox doesn't support nested virtualization (unless they just barely
added it), which is why we have to use fusion (or KVM if you run linux) for
the KVM version of devcloud. Vbox works for the Xen devcloud though
because it doesn't require the Xen guests to have paravirtualization,
whereas cloudstack KVM guests do.

Didn't complete my thought - would be worth putting on the wiki *on a
new page* so that it's not conflicting with the "standard" DevCloud
info.

The wiki is organized around VirtualBox, assuming it works, I think it is
a better choice than Fusion since it free and easy to setup. I don't have
much experience with VirtualBox, does it not support nested hypervisors?

Sounds like useful wiki material to me! You should be able to add/edit to
the wiki without special permissions.

It's actually required by the board. ;-)

The board hasn't asked for that information, and I haven't seen it in
any other reports. That being said, nothing wrong with adding it.

The committer / PMC information is useful (if I was a board member).
Perhaps an update on the total # of committers and total # of PMC.

Dev/Test Environment

Posted by Soheil Eizadi <se...@infoblox.com>.
At the recent Meetup at Citrix (thanks for the great presentations and
food), I found out that developers have had problem running XenServer 6.1
on Mac/Fusion. In case it might benefit others I have an environment with
Fusion (Version 5.0.3) running XenServer 6.1 on my Mac. I configured a
"VMware ESXi 5" profile for the VM so that it could support a nested
Hypervisor and then I attached the ISO DVD and installed as usual.
