Greg,

I tested Xalan-J,  the most recent version,  and things work fine with your
example.   This has been a thoroughly tested area,  so I don't believe
there are problems.   What environment are you using it in,  and if
possible could you provide your full files for examination.

Hi Paul,
I'm on linux.
Thanks for the help: you inspired me to test more thoroughly and
discovered the problem was in my select statement after all; xalan-j
seems to be working fine in this regard.
