This ticket is paused. The general idea is still valid, but the simple solution proposed in the PR was perhaps a bit too simple. There is another set of tickets about improving the storage plugin mechanism itself, and work was started on that. These efforts should be combined to create a "version 2" of the storage plugin mechanism that is  a bit easier to implement, easier to test, and easier to install, version and so on.
