[VOTE] Release Apache Curator 2.0.0-incubating
Hello,
I'd like to release the current version of Curator (that was Netflix Curator) as Apache Curator 2.0.0. The release source artifact is at:
https://people.apache.org/~randgalt/staging/
As this is my first Apache release, please advise on if this is correct or not.
[ ] +1 to release
[ ] +0 undecided/don't care
[ ] -1 do not release (state reason)

[RESULT] VOTE] Release Apache Curator 2.0.0-incubating
Posted by Jordan Zimmerman <ra...@apache.org>.
Just for the record, the vote failed for a variety of reasons.

FYI only IPMC votes are "binding"
http://incubator.apache.org/guides/releasemanagement.html#note-votes
"In the case of podlings, a 3 binding +1s are required by members of
the Incubator PMC. "

I'm biased but I wouldn't follow ZK. It's based on what Hadoop was doing
way back when and not current best practice. I'd take what you're currently
doing (structure that's best for your project) and make sure you follow the
release criteria from the docs. See the checklist on the release page for
the main items.

I particularly don't think that Zookeeper packaging structure is one of the
best, but if you want to follow that particularly due to proximity of the
two projects, I'm ok with it. But note that they do produce a lib with the
binaries and dependencies.

This isn't how I see other Apache projects. I just downloaded the ZooKeeper source and the packaging is just ZooKeeper.
For Curator, the group Id is apache and the project in the pom is Apache Curator. That should be enough, right?

Luciano I agree, this is sensible and the right way to go. I just
wanted to make sure we were clear to Jordan what the rules are and
what's best practice.

Although binaries are considered "convenience artifacts", I believe this is
a must for java releases (including maven artifacts), particularly because
it makes it easier for consumers to integrate these frameworks into their
applications which helps growing the community around the podling.

I go by the following: Apache releases source artifacts, binaries are
considered "convenience artifacts" and not a proper release:
http://www.apache.org/dev/release.html#what
"The Apache Software Foundation produces open source software. All releases
are in the form of the source materials needed to make changes to the
software being released. In some cases, binary/bytecode packages are also
produced as a convenience to users that might not have the appropriate
tools to build a compiled version of the source. "
It's up to you if you want to include binaries along with the source
release. They are helpful to users, which helps to build community, however
in my experience they make the release process tougher (more issues for
people to find).

Source is a must, but most if not all java projects does provide a binary
and maven artifacts.
A good practice is to follow how other projects that are around for a while
do...

I thought that Apache releases were supposed to be source. I'm getting conflicting information from the mentors on this. I'd prefer a binary release to Maven Central.

I really am trying to understand the process. But, it's neither simple nor well documented. So, please bear with me. There are a lot of documents for sure. But, they're spread out and not altogether clear. For instance, the release management doc mentions "www.apache.org/dist/incubator/podling". However, Luciano said "Let's do that when we create the release." Seems like a catch-22 to me.

Jordan did you look at that example "how to release" page I pointed
you at? The one for Ambari? It incorporates a number of best practices
(like handling multple rcs)
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/AMBARI/Releasing+Ambari.
I'd suggest that you first work out your release process (document it)
then attempt to create a release. Read the incubator release page in
depth : http://incubator.apache.org/guides/releasemanagement.html
There's no need to try and pump out a release w/o understanding the
basics. Speed is not the goal at Apache.

This is a tough one. There doesn't appear to be a way to put license headers in confluence files. I'm still investigating but the Maven Doxia Confluence plugin didn't respect the documented Confluence comment syntax <!-- -->

- Packaging/Naming (curator-2.0.0-incubating.zip)
- the project is not curator, it's Apache Curator, so we usually prefix
apache on the distro
- best practices is to postfix source with src
- good practice is to also produce .tar.gz
- so we are looking at something like :
apache-curator-2.0.0-incubating-src.zip
- it should also extract to a folder that describe the file, that is
from apache and is still incubating: apache-curator-2.0.0-incubating-src
- MD5 and SHA1 signature missing
- Types of distributions
- I would encourage a binary distribution of curator
- Are we not distributing maven binaries either ?
- Licensing
- Looks like you notice should get rid of the Google Guava, Mockito,
SLF4J, etc in the source distribution, unless you are actually distributing
class files from some of these dependencies.
- rat is flagging multiple .confluence files as missing apache headers
- Building
- Source distribution fails to build with mvm clean install in mac os
environment when starting the curator-framework tests
- Others
- I don't believe curator site should be part of the source release
- Is there a tag for this release candidate ?
- can't verify signature, have you uploaded your key to a public server ?
Also, I would call things more like RC1, RC2, etc, so we can see and/or
check changes between RCs
