SSI performance

Does anyone know how to speed up Server Side Includes. When I request a page
with some very basic SSI (just inserting a time stamp for example), about a
half second delay occurs (if there is no other server activity). I'm using a
standard Apache 2.0.39 install on FreeBSD 4.6
