The rationale for this patch is that lists.apache.org permalinks are not
forever; they may stop working at some point in the future, and the
hex blurb therein cannot be used to find the message in other archives.

(This was discussed at length on other lists.  I don't mean to reopen that
discussion here, just to FYI.  We now return to your regularly scheduled
rc1 discussions.)
