Re: ping

Posted by Steve Loughran <st...@cloudera.com.INVALID>.
the ASF Hermes mail server was down last week and the replacement was
having problems with dns and trust related to yahoo, cloudera and some
other sites.

That ping message went out 2 days ago, so as far as I know ICMP ping
latency goes, that's pretty bad. Thank you all for your replies, which is
about as good a human variant of the ping protocol

For people who really want it, I've a WiP pure C ping client designed to
output stats in CSV format, the goals being "move a raspberry pi round the
house to collect QoS stats", and "track outages on my netgear powerline
network". the code is flawed as I've forgotten how to safely manage the
lifecycle of strings in C, or decent data structures to manage in-flight
messages without filling up all of the memory.
It turned out that running ping over the powerline was enough to stop the
network adapters from partitioning, so the experiment didn't generate valid
results. I switched back to TPLink devices, which, even though they fry
themselves after ~12 months, work really well until their death (*)

Say what you like about CSV, its a lot easier to generate badly formed CSV
data from a printf statement than it is to create avro records.

(*) Tyrell: The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and
you have burned so very, very brightly, TPLink adapter #04.
