Plugin for checking properties

I am new to maven. I want to be to check certain environment variables
being set before compiling takes place. It is easy to do in ant. In
maven1, there was a <pregoal> tag I could use. I can't seem to find a
way to do this in maven2. Any idea?

I don't know about a plugin to check this for you, but you could always
bind the antrun plugin[1] to the validate phase[2] to do it "the old way".
