error loading shared libraries

Hello all!

I have successfully installed Xerces C++ 2.2.0 and compiled some C++
aplications but I get the following error when I run them:

/error while loading shared libraries: libxerces-c.so.22: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
/
Has anybody an idea of what could be wrong?
I have checked that this library is in the correct path and that the
makefile corresponding environment variable points to that path, I have
checked too that $XERCESCROOT is correct... :(

thanks a lot!

esther

Re: error loading shared libraries

Posted by David J Craigon <da...@arabidopsis.info>.
When a program runs it needs to be able to find the libraries it used
when it was built. This is entirely seperate from telling it where the
library was when you were building your program using -L or somesuch.

Assuming you are on a UNIX... the "program" that looks for libraries is
called ld.so. It looks in a list of directories. So you have two options
for this:

1) Put the xerces-c library somewhere ld.so already looks. (typically
/lib, /usr/lib and others). With xerces-c you can do this by hand, or by
running make install in the same place you typed make.

2) Setting an environment variable. Sitting at my linux computer you
need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to "your-lib-directory-here".
LD_LIBRARY_PATH is called different things on different operating
systems- (but I know it's LD_LIBRARY_PATH on Solaris too).

More info? man ld.so
