Xpath expressions and Variables

Hi All,
I wanted to clarify one doubt, 
Is that right that the value of Xpath expressions cannot be provided in form
of variables??

e.g In <xsl:copy-of> , if I want to give an XPATH expression as the value of
the select attribute then I cannot specify the required value as a
variable..rt??
