I have just spent several hours trying to find troubleshoot the same error when eventually I stumbled across this bug report. I have applied the same workaround as detailed here: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-3937

Any reason why this still isn't fixed when it's such a fundamental issue?

As the OP says, why do you even need UTF8Reader?
