The "dynamic" javascript that picks up the parameters such as date pattern is
generated using the Struts javascript tag, so using a default pattern if no
parameter is supplied would need to go there. However, that tag has no
knowledge of individual validators parameters - so there isn't a good way of
fixing it there.
All these sorts of issues can easily be resolved if I ever get back to actually
implementing the rendering extension I proposed a while ago (see Bug 32343) -
since Commons Validator would become resonsible for rendering the dynamic
javascript and the proposal includes having a script renderer for each
validator which understands the parameters each validator needs.
I'll add a note to that bug for now referencing this one - marking this as
LATER.
