If we went the download way, the swc wouldn't be part of the project (that is what I understood from the discussion). That would mean that developers working on the source would have to download the swc manually and add it to their local project. Which to me seems confusing and more work than needed. But I might be mistaken in any of my assumptions, so please correct me if I got it wrong (never too old to learn ;-))

If you don't change any code in a library, the preferred method is to use the library directly rather than import the code into your project.
Are you saying you don't have ant setup? If you do, then "ant get-as3commons.swc" from the installer directory will download the swc into the libs directory. If you don't want to use ant you can just make the libs directory and download the swc into it by hand.

My workflow doesn't usually involve Ant when working in Flash Builder developing or debugging a project. I like to use the regular 'Debug' button to build and run the source.
I feel like we're having two different discussions and hope you have some patience with a noob and maybe explain in a little more detail how we can include the functionality of the as3commons lib without actually adding it to the project itself (other than when building the project using the Ant script).

The workflow would be you build the installer with ant the first time. That would download the swc. We'd change the eclipse project to add the swc to the build path. Then you're free to use eclipse all you want to build the project. This is the same workflow you would use with the SDK if you want to do development with eclipse.

Ok, I get it now. Thanks. I still think that adding the actual source for small components makes more sense, but I can see why that would be a hassle for larger components, with changing the licenses and all.
I'm not sure how to set up what you are suggesting, so I'm looking forward to your effort and will do my best to learn from it.
