install problems.

Hello, I am attempting to install cocoon on Debian Linux w/ apache 1.3.12 and tomcat 3.1.  I followed the install instructions, but now I can't view the samples right.  When I try to view the xml files in the /xdocs directory, I get their source code rather than a parsed file.  

Any ideas?
