programatic retrieval of validation error

Has Dutta's patch been applied?  It does not appear to be the case.  I 
could really use this functionality in some v2 work that I'm doing so 
I'd be grateful if the person who was doing the code reviews could 
review it again and submit into v1 and v2 (if that is possible).
