Renaming Quarks

I researched the Quarks name and took the findings to the Quarks PMC. Due
to the name not being unique enough, the PMC has determined that we should
rename our project.

I am calling for ideas for a new name, keeping in mind the following from
the web site on suitable names (
http://incubator.apache.org/guides/names.html#elimination). Please provide
your ideas or comment on your preferences.

To be suitable, a name needs to be

   - judged *appropriate* by the wider community; and
   - *unique enough* to avoid confusion

If I have enough ideas, I will probably put together a list for
discussion/vote early next week. To start, here are some ideas some of my
colleagues suggested:

Pipir - (2 pi r) -- i.e. everything on the edge; and pronounced piper

Tringa (a wading piper) - http://tringa.com/index.php?submit=about

Tringa came with a suggestion for a logo

Nyquist

Mist

Diztil - play on distil

Thanks,
Kathy

I like Anemone, and the challenge of saying and spelling it correctly keeps you on your toes. I also like Ejji and diztil (although auto correct battling to correct diztil to distill could wear thin).

Another suggestion is Edgent as a conflation of Edge Agent, no hits on google for edging software or on trademarks.

Cheers,
Mike.

Thanks for doing the searching. I got similar results when I search on
Anemone. I've been putting my search results on the wiki at
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/QUARKS/Quarks+Renaming+Discussion,
and added a few that you found to the list I compiled there.

Hi,

Re Anemone and trademarks.

Trademarks exist for diet supplements, beauty products, perfumes, fish shop, letterpress, handmade paper flowers and soft toy. Not all are “live”. So it looks like there would be no trademark confusion here [1].

A google search for ”+anemone +software" gives only 28 hits! There are however several github repo with the name [3] The most active/popular being a web spider framework. [4]

Other google search found mini storage / camping / marina software [5][6] and a few games and screen savers.

So other than web sider framework there’s actually very little in the same space and no potential trademarks issues that I could find.

Thanks,
Justin

I like Anemone and Edgean (mentioned in the Wiki).

I added Fledge: a portmanteau of 'flow' and 'edge'. It rolls of the tongue
pretty easily and I only found two instances of the word in a Google search.

I like both Tringa and Anemone.

I also added Bobcat for the following reasons: They consume almost anything, are very adaptable, and live on forest edges.

I have the feeling that any existing (english?) word is likely to be
used in some way with software, especially animals. It might be better
that we use a made up word to guarantee uniqueness.

Dan.

I haven't thought of any good ideas myself, but I think we've got a good
start.

I like Anemone, but I think I just like to say "Apache Anemone". My
daughter is very annoyed with me :-)

I added Enzyme to the wiki as a possibility.

I can see your point but if a vowel name is good enough then I think
it's worth the effort to fix any doc issues.

Dan.

Hi,

Not done a full trademark search but what about “anemone”? It grabs and filters things and lives in tidal areas / on the edge of the sea.

One down side it may be to difficult to spell?

Thanks,
Justin

I think this is excellent advice. I started a wiki page here
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/QUARKS/Quarks+Renaming+Discussion.
Please add your ideas or comments to the wiki. I'll also watch the dev
list and add any information that might not make it onto the wiki. Happy

Thanks Kathy for starting this conversation.

I'd suggest starting a Wiki page with suggestions as images won't appear
in the archives. Also this would provide a place to specifically
contribute ideas and images.

On the name itself I don't have specific suggestions, but it might be a
good idea to stick with something that starts with a consonant, so the
documentation doesn't have to be reviewed and changed from a Quarks ...
to an Avowelname ...

Hi Kathy -

Nice Logos!

Here are a couple of ideas from my team:

Kinaara - edge in Hindi
Ejji - edge in Japanese

Thanks!
