adding module to apache on linux 7.1

Hi i'm currently running apache 1.3.22 and need to add a module.  Linux 7.1 
provides a version of apache via the RPM.  I am just hesitant about adding 
a module and loosing the functionality of my RMP manager and such.  How 
easy is it to tie in a module and still have linux OS recognize the Apache 
installation via its Up2date program?

Anyone else running similar setups and add  modules with or without 
problems?!
