[dbutils] Releasing 1.5

Does anyone have thoughts on releasing commons-dbutils 1.5? There are
5 changes since 1.4 (issues 84, 77, 73, 67, and 66), and I think
that's probably enough to warrant a new release.

I'm new to this whole process, so I'm unsure as to what to do next.

Thanks...

Continuum is not exactly easy to configure (*); I added a build with -Pjava-1.6.

(*) It looks simple, but it's all too easy to accidentally configure
all Commons projects instead of just one.

How should I have updated the Continuum build?

You changed the pom to require a minimum of Java 1.6, but the
Continuum build has yet to be updated.

I've added a 1.6 build to Dbutils and queued a build. Hopefully it
won't fail this time.

Clearly I did something wrong:
http://vmbuild.apache.org/continuum/buildResult.action?projectId=74&projectName=&buildId=15727&projectGroupId=0

Also, how can I manually kick-off a contunuum build and/or simulate
that environment on my computer? It builds and tests without error on
my system.

Thanks...

The clirr plugin section can be removed from the POM as it is
inherited from CP 22.

Likewise the maven-compiler-plugin section

When I get a chance, I'm going to change the pom to require Java 1.6
and make a note in the changes.xml file as well. If that builds with
Continuum, then I'll attempt to cut an RC release.

Thanks to everyone for their help/guidance...

Reading more, this (getSQLXML) sounds like a good reason to move to Java 1.6.

DB code is tied to JDBC, which is tied to version of Java. Java 5 is
dead and the only reason I'd heard to consider 5 was Android, which
doesn't feel like it should a big database client codebase.

So +1 to moving to Java 6.

+1. Generally try to stay 1.5 until a good reason. That good reason
could be a single method, it'd depend on the method :)

No, Java version changes don't require a major version bump according
to Commons rules, though I would perhaps expect one for Java 1.3 to
1.6 (say).

I just think that requiring Java 1.6 for a single method may be an
unnecessary restriction of the field of use.

What is the "rule" on when you can switch Java versions? Is going from
1.4 to 1.5 too small of a version number bump to require a different
version of Java? Would we need to wait until 2.0 to switch to Java
1.6?

Thanks...

I took a look at the Continuum build error from Nov 26th and the error is
that adding getSQLXML() in BeanProcessor.java requires
importing java.sql.SQLXML which was introduced in Java 1.6.

Currently DBUTILS is set to only require Java 1.5.

Thoughts?

There are a bunch of shell scripts running CRONed that validate various
things and two of them are complaining to the site-dev mailing list
about a key that cannot be found on any key server. It is the key
C95C557D8EC998319F75BD68E7954A57B0EC1E65 which seems to be yours.

Maybe the scripts won't publish anything unless your key can be found
via gpg --recv-keys .

I also added my fingerprint to LDAP and I've created a RDF file as well,
but again I don't yet see my info here:
http://people.apache.org/committers.html Again, I'm guessing/hoping that it
just takes a while to perform the sync.

I'll give it a day and if I still don't see anything, then ask for help.

Now on to cutting a release...

Thanks!

And make sure the key has been uploaded to a public key server.

+1. Don't forget to add your public key to the KEYS file. That is a must. Being in the web of trust is a (very) nice to have.

I think you just PGP with your release key. Later on we can strengthen
the signing by adding you to the web-of-trust.

I haven't forgotten about this... been tied up at work with a new employee.

One potential issue though, I have not created an Apache PGP key yet, so I
will not have a chance to get it signed by anyone. What is the protocol for
getting one's key signed?

Thanks...

Hi Bill,
Continuum just notified a build failure :P
If you intend to cut a new release, read our `Creating Releases` page
on wiki[1], count on me if you need help (I was the last on cutting a
DbUtils release)
