[jira] [Created] (SOLR-4050) Solr example fails to start in
nightly-smoke
Michael McCandless created SOLR-4050:
----------------------------------------
Summary: Solr example fails to start in nightly-smoke
Key: SOLR-4050
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-4050
Project: Solr
Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Michael McCandless
Priority: Blocker
The nightly smoke job is stalled (I'll go kill it shortly): https://builds.apache.org/job/Lucene-Solr-SmokeRelease-4.x/22/console
It's stalled when trying to run the Solr example ... the server produced this output:
{noformat}
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.eclipse.jetty.xml.XmlConfiguration
at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:217)
at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method)
at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:205)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:321)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:266)
at org.eclipse.jetty.start.Main.invokeMain(Main.java:424)
at org.eclipse.jetty.start.Main.start(Main.java:602)
at org.eclipse.jetty.start.Main.main(Main.java:82)
ClassNotFound: org.eclipse.jetty.xml.XmlConfiguration
Usage: java -jar start.jar [options] [properties] [configs]
java -jar start.jar --help # for more information
{noformat}
Seems likely the Jetty upgrade somehow caused this...
Separately I committed a fix to smoke tester so that it quickly fails if the Solr example fails to start ...

Robert Muir commented on SOLR-4050:
-----------------------------------
I really think the failure was due to the second pre-existing problem i mentioned above (I caused these actually)
Really a horrible bug (thats why i want to know its fixed!): because we do "special" ivy stuff here it was possible
for you to have a example/lib with both 8.1.2 and 8.1.7 jars. This would then get sucked into binary packaging!
I had previously worked LUCENE-4390 to detect this issue and fail the build on it explicitly, but i feel
like we maybe disabled that because of a problem deleting files in Windows jenkins...
Good that the smoketester found this!

Robert Muir commented on SOLR-4050:
-----------------------------------
Your commit is correct, but the (pre-existing) problems are:
* its screwed up someone must bump jetty in two places, so start.jar should be an ivy profile
* ivy sync=true is disabled here, because of that its easy to have a dirty checkout also with 8.1.2 jars, and then for them to get sucked into packaging.
I'm gonna see if i can make it work in a cleaner way....

Urgggg... I guess I shouldn't have tried committing during a conference. I was just so happy to have power/internet back finally!
I only upgraded the jetty libs (and did ant test of course), but I didn't check "example".
Looks like start.jar comes from example/build.xml instead of example/ivy.xml like the other jetty jars.
I'll try to update soon (but if I can't get to it today, I'll be travelling all day Friday).

Robert Muir commented on SOLR-4050:
-----------------------------------
The ivy is messy here (due to the renaming of some jars original names). There are more problems.
Give me some time I want to ensure its cleaned up correctly, but this is definitely the issue :)

> The nightly smoke job is stalled (I'll go kill it shortly): https://builds.apache.org/job/Lucene-Solr-SmokeRelease-4.x/22/console
> It's stalled when trying to run the Solr example ... the server produced this output:

> Seems likely the Jetty upgrade somehow caused this...
> Separately I committed a fix to smoke tester so that it quickly fails if the Solr example fails to start ...

Robert Muir commented on SOLR-4050:
-----------------------------------
It works locally (ant example + java -jar start.jar)
So something must be screwed up in packaging somehow.
