[users@httpd] suggestions on faking DOCUMENT_ROOT

the server variable DOCUMENT_ROOT has long been a issue for me. i've
resisted using mod_vhost_alias for a long time, but recently
implemented it.

the issue, that many might be familiar with, is that mod_vhost_alias
doesn't set DOCUMENT_ROOT, so all my portable web applications that use
this variable to find their absolute path, break and need to be
hardwired to their current path. this sucks and is not elegant to me.

and to further it's stubbornness, it seems this is the one variable i
can't manually set via apache's 'SetEnv' directive.

i'm reaching out and looking for a good list of clever solutions to
this ridiculous problem and possibly a good explanation/philosophy of
why it still exists.

thanks.
