[DISCUSS] Java 8 and AOO

We've had a few reports of issues with Java 8 and AOO, especially with Base.

Can anyone currently using Java 8 with AOO confirm this?
Current Java requirements are here:

RE: [DISCUSS] Java 8 and AOO

Posted by "Dennis E. Hamilton" <de...@acm.org>.
Here's more detail:

Issue 126130 seems to be all about the problem of having Java 8 (or intentionally upgrading to Java 8) on MacOS and having attempt used of the JVM from AOO lead to a fault somewhere. Users either can't get the recommended Java 6 or misunderstand the site's advice. <https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126130>.

This could be some sort of configuration handshake in the startup of the JVM, yet it seems more complicated than that.

Issue 115200 began back in the days of OOo 3.2.1 and discussion started and ended in 2010, evidently with a happy outcome for some. Mac OSX then too.

This page is credited with providing a fix, but about upgrading to Java 6.

Has anyone learned of anything different with regard to these Mac OSX problems?

The problems I've seen reported are apparently all on MacOS. Something about needing a legacy Java 6 to work and there is no way for the user to accomplish that, apparently.

Are there others?

Do you think the message is from AOO instead of the OS?

There is also a crasher in Base, apparently, but not certain it is the same situation.

I can confirm that AOO 4.1.1 on MacOSX 10.9.5 seems to run well with
Java 8 (Oracles jdk-8u40-macosx-x64). I ran a letter wizard (using Java)
and created a new DB. But of course I did not more intensive testing
with the DB.

FWIW, I use 4.1.1 (dev build, UK English) and Java 8 update 31. I have not experienced any problems with the Java or with the application. I’m also running Yosemite 10.3.3, a dev build. That said, nearly all of my use of OpenOffice is in text, presentation, Calc, not Base, at least not in any interesting way.

I can walk through the issues described and see what happens….

I believe I found the bug numbers: it's about 64-bit:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66014
and
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70846

just FYI... ;-)

Well I follow the LibreOffice development intensively. I can't find the
correct bug number right now, but
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44679 seems related:
Apple and Oracle (depending on JRE and OS version) change at OS X 10.7 /
10.8 the standard install path and the detection mode. LibreOffice tries
now (if i remember correctly) to detect first the old JRE6 path and
afterwards the jre7 path - doesn't matter was "java --version" says.

All in all, the mess happens by the Apple to Oracle switch somewhen
Oracle overtook the Java development and apple didn't want to maintain
JRE any longer (similar to flash, but that's another story)

So try to detect the correct Java version / path esp. if it is a clean
install and not upgraded from (e.g.) 10.5 to 10.10....

OK, I see Larry has done this.

I took a cursory look at Ariels's Comment 7 also.
It would help if we knew what particular functions of AOO failed without
the use of Java 6.

Many months ago, I tried to get, through additional java flags, what
problems any of our java code might be causing for java 7 specifically.
Some methods we are using are deprecated, but I didn't interpret these
as show stoppers. However, I will upgrade to Java 8, and run through
this scenario again to see what comes out.

So odd! But thanks for this bit of info. A good hint! Based on this, it
seems our Mac version is looking in the "wrong" place for what would be
a normal install.

Thanks, Larry. That’s interesting to know. I do have Java 6 also installed (along with 8, update 31), and have not had issues, as mentioned, with my 10.10.3 (not 10.3.3, as I had mistyped).

Until a fix is put in, can I suggest that we put the sentence you wrote above in an FAQ and in the panel on Java in the preferences?

Some further clarification.
Issue 126130 is specific to Macs.
AOO does not require Java 6. It will work with newer versions, however, AOO will not find newer
versions unless Java 6 is installed. This is a bug in AOO brought about after Apple quit
building and providing their own version of Java.

Larry, that's great. I saw that in a screen shot that showed both of them installed.

Please add that link to Bugzilla issue 126130. If you don't have an account there, let me know and I will do it.

Oh, and MAC users need to know that they can have multiple JRE installations, so there is no need to uninstall a later one or fear that installing a Java 6 VM is going to limit them from the latest somehow. Some reporters seem to get snarled up with that and bounce out of the Java 6 update page because there is so much encouragement to go download the latest (Java 8 now).

Apache OpenOffice works with Java 8, but you also need to have Java 6 installed. Java 6 for
Macs was provided by Apple, not Oracle.
