[jira] [Created] (IMPALA-15244) GEOMETRY gaps: Think through client interface

Csaba Ringhofer created IMPALA-15244:
----------------------------------------

Summary: GEOMETRY gaps: Think through client interface
                 Key: IMPALA-15244
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-15244
             Project: IMPALA
          Issue Type: Sub-task
          Components: Backend, Clients
            Reporter: Csaba Ringhofer

What type to return to clients is not a clear decision:
"dumb" clients without geo lib benefit from something readable, e.g. WKT
"smart" clients with geolib benefit from some binary protocol, e.g WKB

I prefer making this settable with a query option, for example see Snowflake's approach:
https://docs.snowflake.com/en/sql-reference/data-types-geospatial :
GEOMETRY_OUTPUT_FORMAT/GEOGRAPHY_OUTPUT_FORMAT can switch between WKT, WKB, etc..

psql uses hex encoded EWKB or binary EWKB in binary mode
