MAJOR Stale Link Issue. Help!!
Hi everyone,
we're having some issues with Stale Link Exceptions.
Our close to production application sometimes fires these exceptions.
We tried to mark the Form not stateful,
tried to increase the session timeout in web.xml to like 600 seconds
(but the error doesn't go away), converted some of the Foreaches to
ListEdits, tried to add headers to each pages's response (cache
validation and expiration stuff).
On some of our screens we can have 40-60 editable fields. By the time
you get to edit all of these and Click "Save" which is a link submit ,
the stale link appears, saying that
"Rewind expected ID $1 tobe $Hidden1, but was LinkSubmit$1". So Tapestry
loses track of ALL form elements except the last one.. That is weird.
We're kinda running out of ideas and I have yet to find a logical
explanation of the Stale Link Exception.
We are using 3.0 beta 3.
What settings should we take a look at ?
Web application settings ?
Tapestry settings ?
Tomcat ?
Component settings?
Thanks for your advice !

The easiest way to handle persistent properties is to create them via
<property-specification>.
YourPage.page
<property-specification name="rowBeans" type="com.xyz.YourClassName"
persistent="yes" />

I solved the issue:
Right after I create that vector I am notifying tapestry that I want
this to be a persistent property:
Tapestry.fireObservedChange(this,"rowBeans",rowBeans);
It doesn't interfere with multiple users, so I guess it is Ok.
Thanks to everyone for their answers !

I tried something ... overriden the detach page method.
The data on the screen is taken from beans in a Vector -> a Foreach
component in the .html
after super.detach() executes, that vector is null .
I'm running out of ideas here.....

Consider this example (I think your problem is similar to that):
The page class contains:
class MyPage extends BasePage implements IExternalPage{
private Long oid;
void activateExternalPage(..){
oid = (Long)params[0];
}
...........
render page and form components based on the oid
...........
void detach(){
//do nothing
}
}
In that case your form might work in a single session, rapid click
environment. Still this is wrong. You should call oid = null; in detach
and save the oid in a hidden in a form for instance.

Re: Refreshproblem on Home-page with 4 frames
Posted by Programozás <pr...@hotmail.com>.
Browsers behave like you wrote. Going BACK apply only to the last updated
frame - in your case the header frame.
The thing is even more difficult because IE and Mozilla handles multiple
frames differently when the BACK button is pressed.
You can hack it by explicitly refreshing your frames using Javascript.
I recommed not to use frames if you can avoid them. (The only exception is
when some part of the page remains REALLY constant during the whole
browsing.)

Refreshproblem on Home-page with 4 frames
Posted by Joerg Latteier <la...@online.de>.
Hi,
my application layout within the "Home.html" page consists of four
frames
(one for the dynamic content, one header, one frame for navigation-menu
and one for general info purposes).
All pages use @Conditional to show different content based upon whether
the user is logged in or not.
When starting, the login-form is located in the header and after
submitting
the username/password in the form and successful login I want to go back
to the "Home" page with
cycle.activate("Home");
As there are @Conditional-clauses in the pages within all frames, the
user should then get a different view - but: only the header frame is
refreshing correctly - all other frames do not change.
Only when pressing CTRL-F5 all frames refresh. The browser's setting
is to load the page on every access.
Any idea why this does not work as expected ?
Comments on the general concept on using frames here would also be
appreciated.
Thanks
Joerg

As I know - correct me if I'm wrong - this setting applies only to template

YES, this seems to be a problem on other nature. That interval is
Tapestry cache object flush interval. The page object you use is
remaining in cache for that time then it is flushed. Your problem
consist in the fact that you have some information in that object which
is not made null on detach if you submit the form quick enough then you
get the same cache object if not you get a new object without that
information. For example if you have a private String bla in the page
object it must be made null on page detach. Check to see that your page
state is cleaned on detach. Anyway if this is the problem you whould
also have problems with multiple users accessing the page.

Fact is, the stale link only appears after what it seems to be a FINITE
interval ..something like 5 minutes.

Maybe the Foreach's source changes between the rendering and rewinding?

Re: MAJOR Stale Link Issue. Help!!

In case of the foreach component do you keep the source(list) used to
generate it until formSubmit. If you do not do that and when the form is
rewinded the source is empty this can explain your stale link. You can
look into the contrib:table sources to see for an example. The source
must be the same until the formSubmit is called.

That implies that you are not persisting data properly, which will break things when you have
multiple users or clustering.
What's happening is that some data needed when your form submits is living on in an instance
variable inside a page, rather than as a pesistent page property (or passivated into the form using
Hidden or ListEdit).

Turned out that the solution was to increase the window of the object pool:
something like.. getPage().getEngine().getPool().setWindow(100);
(defaults to 10)
Hope it helps
