It will not cause incompatibilities for hive: for hive of an earlier version or hive after HIVE-3719 with PLAIN SASL auth turned off, SASL PLAIN server won't be registered and invoked, which means it's only used when username and password authentication is enabled in hive. Therefore by adding the PLAIN server implementation into branch 1， hive security will be supported with branch 1 hadoop, but not supported with 0.23 hadoop. It would be nice to pull this patch to 23 as well so that we would have this security feature supported in 23 as well.
