1.5 B3 bug?
Apache Ant version 1.5Beta3 compiled on June 22 2002

The <war core task, with the <classes .. directive seems to be pulling
in all files under the directory.

Shouldn't it just bring in the .class files? How can this behavior be
achieved?

Thank you.

According to the doc:
  The nested classes element specifies a FileSet. All files included
  in this fileset will end up in the WEB-INF/classes directory of the
  war file.

Which basically says that <classes> is just like any other <fileset>, as
far as specifying files to include/exclude in it. So if you only want
.class files, you'll need to use either the 'includes' attribute or a
nested <include> element -- eg:
  <classes dir=...>
    <include name="**/*.class"/>
    ...
  </classes>

Why would you want to have only the classes jarred up?
Properties files, graphics files, and other configuration files
are important too. I'm writing a Struts application; I need to
put the application properties file into the classes section.
