[DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Hi OEJB bros...

Recently it is being discussed on different mailing lists and different
threads the usage of Git as an alternative SCM besides/replacing SVN in
ASF. It is has been recommended to start with different TLP projects so we
can measure and put out hands on the detailed requirements and procedures
to help either already existing projects, whether TLP or Podlings, and
future projects to use Git if this is their favorite.

So I would like to propose OpenEJB as one of the TLP(s) to start with, and
I already was in contact with Paul Davis and I can and I will help in that
transition.

Thoughts ?

Infra,

The Wicket PMC would like to request that we be switched from SVN to Git.
I will volunteer to assist with this migration as well as with fixing any
problems we find with the Git-hosting-related code that Paul Davis and
others have so generously created. Others on the Wicket team may also be
able to help some.

Please let us know if you accept this proposal and what we need to do to
get started.

Best Regards,
Jeremy Thomerson

Exactly, thats why it is a voluntary act, no one is asking us to do that,
but OEJB is a very active community with all very skilled ppl, IMO at least
:), and hence we are one candidate project to help in that.

I'm definitely not saying that GIT doesn't scale. Actually Linux is FAR bigger than most Apache projects.

BUT: it requires some different mindset!

I remember well how I felt when switching from CVS to SVN and first saw the svn copy and svn mv stuff. I really felt this was a huge step back from CVS (and still feel that way for this very part). SVN did make some design decisions which are absolutely elegant, and for other cases just suck. With GIT it's the same!

GIT is tremendously cool because you have all the history locally available. Also the merging and tree-ish stuff is really 1A.

I tried to sum up the pros and cons in the CouchDB wiki [2], but it basically boils down to the following difference:

*) SVN is file-oriented. All the history is bound to a file. If you rename the file on the filesystem, then SVN will loose all the history. But it's easy to move files and even directories around with svn mv and retain all the history.

*) GIT is repository oriented. All the history is just a diff applied to a previous state. It doesn't matter if code got moved between files or just rename a file - git will perfectly know what happened, because all changes are just diffs... Otoh, it's not possible to track/handle/change/move files without looking at the whole repository! It's therefor also not possible to maintain 1 big fat repo for all ASF projects as we do in SVN.

As I said: it has both pros and cons, and people must choose wisely what they need.

I would even say just because Git doesn't scale as it looks like from
what you've said doesn't mean DVCS as a concept doesn't scale in

Personnaly i think DVCS are great for new, small and not very active

Anyway, I still would like to share this flick with you for two good reasons:

1) I like the MacBook crowd especially the one with the matchstick man
2) I like the concept of interactivity compared to books O'Reilly is
introducing here

Hi...

Was busy at work and with a big move in career in life, details about
that later ;).

Seems that there is no real interest in Git support, hence I am closing
this discussion with a main conclusion of -1 :D.

> Disappointing.  We move stuff in and out of trunk all the time.

I think I need to elaborate a bit more in depth about the possibilities.

There is no straight 'you cannot move with history' because this heavily depends on the situations.

a.) you CAN retain history if you e.g. have a sandbox-repo which is a clone of the official upstream repo.

If you just add new features in a new branch, then the tree-ish (the diff-objects forming a tree) has a parent with a root node sha1 of the upstream repository. Thus GIT can apply any merge from your sandbox repo to the canonical main repo and perfectly retain history. This will of course only work if the work you like to merge is rooted in the upstream repo somehow. It is NOT possible to just git-merge a nice feature from e.g. openwebbeans.git into openejb.git (or the other way around), because those 2 repos don't have a common ancestor!

b.) GIT provides a porcelain (the little hardcore pieces which form the foundation layer for all the polished things on top) which allows to import with history. git porcelains are certainly able to modify the history, so I think it could work somehow. I'm not sure if git-fetch from such a repo into a new branch and then merging it will success, but it might be worth a try.

After a bit searching I saw that Linus did something already: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/5126/

Disappointing. We move stuff in and out of trunk all the time. And as you point out on the Maven list, having a ton of tiny repos, some active some not, is really frustrating. Reorganizing has serious consequences -- dead repos, lost history, etc.

The "one big ASF repo" that SVN offers is really elegant. Git's pension to force you to split things up into tiny islands between which code cannot flow with history seems to eat away at some of the advantages Git brings.

Are there plans in the Git roadmap to improve this?

Why are people not holding their feet to the fire and making them fix such basic things?

Re: [DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Posted by Mark Struberg <st...@yahoo.de>.
Of course GIT can be used under Windows!

That's the reason why git 1.2 or so changed all commands from "git-xxx" to "git xxx".
Originally there was a 'git' executable and tons of symlinks like git-clone, git-fetch, git-ls-files etc. This was really a bummer in windows, because the only way to implement this in Win* was to copy the git executable 120 times and thus filling 30MB of file space.

Nowadays git-clone and all other commands got replaced with git clone (without the dash between) and msysgit works fine in Windows environments.

But there are other things to consider when moving to GIT! GIT has a lot or benefits, but also a few downsides which have to be considered:

* tags and branches are always repository-global! It's not possible to just tag a single subdirectory as you can do in SVN. You really need to know upfront how you will going to release your stuff later (all the modularisation thingy), because that's exactly the way you need to separate your repositories.

* git does not support a real sparse checkout handling and git-submodules handling still sucks.

* you cannot move a directory with all his history from one git repo to another one (e.g. sandbox to proper) if they don't have a common tree-ish ancestor.

All this can be resolved by understanding how git works and then adopting the workflow a bit. Please keep in mind that we did this for SVN as well when we switched from CVS to SVN. E.g. SVN treating all tags and branches as a 'svn copy' underneath also caused a lot of problems, but we learned how to cope with it! The same will be needed for adopting GIT with large projects.

Re: [DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Posted by Romain Manni-Bucau <rm...@gmail.com>.
We shouldnt support both IMHO.

I think we should wait a bit.

I love dvcs but for a wide project im not convinced.

Just to conclude on the win note, i never had a good feeback from a win
user. Personnaly i used it under cygwin and plugin was boring to install
when it was easy under linux.

Re: [DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Yes but the intention is that this canonical repo can be managed as a git
repo, so developers/committers use the facilities they like to use in Git.

And BTW, SVN will not be removed both are going to be supported and when a
new project is coming to ASF they will have to choose which one to use. For
already existing projects, whether TLP(s) or Podling(s) they can choose
between either still being SVN or move to Git.

I am not sure about supporting both for the same project.

Re: [DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Posted by Romain Manni-Bucau <rm...@gmail.com>.
For me one canonical repo doesnt mean dvcs so svn is enough.

Dev can still use svn bridges to use dvcs advantages.

No?

I know what you are talking about, and it really is PITA and we must not have those issues
That's why the ASF insists on ONE canonical repository location which is hosted at apache.org!

The building issue with heavily modularized projects is another problem. This can be eased by using git-submodules, but it's by far easy to use and comprehensive yet :/

Also: official Apache Releases must ONLY be cut from the canonical project repos hosted at apache.org! We might add new temporary repositories while voting on a release and once the VOTE succeeds, we push the changes (release branch + tags) to the canonical upstream repo (and drop the temp repo again). Btw, this is something that Github doesn't provide atm...

JIRA integration with GIT works fine.

Re: [DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Posted by dsh <da...@googlemail.com>.
So if I hear all of your voices correct there were indeed issues with
Git on Windoze in the past but according to Mark they may have been
fixed in the meantime. What about if somebody of us would try to have
a test-cycle of downloading, compiling etc. pp of OEJB on Windoze to
see whether there are still prominent issues?

Concerning GUIs I think I used the Git client in Eclipse and it worked
accordingly at least based on what I did at that time. There's as well
TortoiseGit which might be a good test candidate for testing Git GUI
support under Windoze.

Cheers
Daniel

Re: [DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Posted by Mohammad Nour El-Din <no...@gmail.com>.
Hi, again :), this not a final thing, the move is a voluntary effort from
proposed TLP projects to adapt Git more and more inside ASF, and hence yes
there are still tons of questions and issues that we need to tackle and
solve *together* as a community.

Thats whole purpose behind that proposal, and sure such questions are 100%
valid.

So, lets focus on what we are discussing here :), that is, are we willing
to go into that effort and help ASF evolve to a new SCM tool which has a
lot of demand recently ? Or not we don't want/need to go through that and
lets wait till all is clear and the road is already drawn and hence we only
apply what has been already tested and experienced by others :) ?

Feedback :) ?

Re: [DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Posted by Jonathan Gallimore <jo...@gmail.com>.
Thought I'd chip in my thoughts on this.

Personally, I haven't encountered issues running Git on Windows lately, but
I remember it being awful when I first looked at it a few years back. I
agree with Romain's point though, it would be a shame for someone not to
contribute to the project because they can't get the SCM system working for
them.

Generally speaking I'm quite a bit of a fan of Git (and I really like
Github as well - I'm starting to use it to play around with new projects),
and I'd be more than happy to use Git when working on OpenEJB. That said,
there are a few things I think it would be good to discuss and clarify
first.

- Documentation

I'm generally quite happy with checking out, pushing and pulling, and I
know there's some really good documentation for Git out there, but I think
I'd find it pretty useful to have some sort basic cheatsheet, perhaps on
the source code page of the website (
http://openejb.apache.org/dev/source-code.html) showing how to clone, pull,
push and contribute a patch. I think clear documentation here will
definitely be key. I ran into some frustration recently with Arquillian -
they show git://github.com/arquillian/arquillian.git as being the
repository to clone on their page (
http://www.jboss.org/arquillian/build.html). It isn't, and it took a little
while to figure out I had to checkout a number of different repositories
listed under here: https://github.com/arquillian to get what I actually
wanted. A number of their developers also have forks on Github, so I wasn't
ever 100% convinced I was looking at the right thing.

Should we decide to go ahead, I'm happy to contribute documentation and
tutorials in this area.

- Forking

Talking of forks, I have a couple of questions in this area. I use two
different machines - keeping them in sync if I have changes I haven't
committed to SVN yet can be tricky. I imagine I could have a fork of
OpenEJB on Github I can push and pull to as I please to get around this.
I'm not quite sure how I'd push what I have on the fork back to the main
repository - is this something that would work? Is that a workflow that
we'd recommend?

If developers (I'm not thinking of committers here) did have their own
forks somewhere like Github, and they were doing very experimental work, I
wonder if there's a danger that the work that happens in those forks
doesn't make it back to the main codebase, and maybe binaries of these
forks get distributed? Whilst I appreciate that this can already happen
with the way things stand as they are, and there's not anything necessarily
wrong with forking the code, I wonder whether this is something we
could/should keep an eye out for, and if we see it, we can encourage people
to join our team?

- Features

It would be good to get an idea of what features would be available with
Git. For example, I don't know if this is a Git thing or a Github specific
feature, but I often see 'pull requests' on Github projects. Would that be
available on the Apache Git setup? Would it be integrated with JIRA
somehow? If there's a link that details what will available with the Apache
Git R/W setup it would be great if someone could post it.

I think we still need to make sure that we have the ability to browse the
source as we do with SVN now. The ability to see changes committed against
JIRA issues as they are now is also necessary. I'm sure someone has already
thought of all this stuff, and I'm sure the necessary hooks are already
there in JIRA, just thought it would be good to make sure :)

Cheers

Jon

Re: [DISCUSS] - OpenEJB to use Git (Fwd: [PROPOSAL] Wicket to use Git@ASF)

Posted by dsh <da...@googlemail.com>.
Mo and Romain,

concerning Git - what exactly doesn't work under windows that does
work under Unix-like operating systems?

And btw, maybe we should first of all get down to the nitty-gritty
which is whether we could imagine such a transition at all or are
completely against it and afterwards talk about details such as what
isn't supported on Windoze and what not.

Cheers
Daniel

Git is the SCM under discussion not Mercuarial at the moment.

Mercurial if you want but not git since it is still not as easily useable
as it should be under windows (i know this OS sucks but we have to cope
with).

At long last! I've been dreaming about it for ages, but since I'm not
an active committer, I won't prove Git's usefulness. I know ASF
transitioned to git - http://git.apache.org/, but "This is a
collection of read-only Git mirrors of Apache codebases." What do I
need to do to use git in write mode?
