Same problem here (using mod_kerberos instead of pure basic auth). 
When debug log is activated, it shows that the first directory listing
operation is authenticated, thus granted, but any other file stats reading in
this directory is unauthenticated and denied.

PS: I'm using nginx now, no pb so far :/
