Please Help!!! Cannot Start james

I downloaded James-2.1.3.zip from
http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/james/binaries/
again.

I unzipped the James-2.1.3.zip and did not touch any
of the files. I then

C:\james-2.1.3\bin>run

The console shows:

  Using PHOENIX_HOME: F:\dev\james-2.1\james-2.1
  Using PHOENIX_TMPDIR:
F:\dev\james-2.1\james-2.1\temp
  Using JAVA_HOME: F:\system\jdk\1.4.2

  Phoenix 4.0.1

and followed by error messages shown in my previous
post. I am unable to start James. I have no idea
about what happened. Please help!!

hmmm...

that worked for me (I just checked)

check your config.xml.. you didnt change the port for remote admin?

you dont have zonealarm or similar firewall running? you may need to open
your PC up on that port or allow the application to have server rights..

I
1. clicked on Start of my Windows XP pro
2. clicked on Run
3. entered telnet 127.0.0.1 4555 in the text field
   that is next to Open:
4. clicked on OK

The console was prompted on the screen for a couple of
seconds and then disappeared.

make sure james is running then open up a new dos command window and
enter the following:

$ telnet localhost 4555

a window will openup and message will be displayed asking for your login
and password - anter "root"for the username hit enter, then enter "root"
for the password. You should get a little message saying welcome. Now
you can type the command

  adduser caroline secret

then my checkout the help command, and when your finished - enter the
command quit. Your user account on the server is established.

When we refer to a server name we mean names like ibm.com, apache.org,
etc. These are domain names. To name your computer the first thing you
need to do is aquire a domain name - for example, caroline-jen.com is an
available name. Next you need to supply the domain name authority with
a DNS server address. You could use someone like www.zoneedit.com -
they provide free DNS service on limited usage. Within your DNS
provider established and the IP address of the DNS server registered
with the name autority, your domain name get published all over the
world - so people like us can locate your machine. Next step - with
your domain name setup you need to declare to the DNS server that your
running a mail server. You can do this by setting an MX record. For
example you would probably declare an MX record that associated
mail.caroline-jen.com with the server caroline-jen.com. Once you have
done that - then if I were to send an email to
anything@caroline-jen.com, then the mail server sending the message can
resolve your machine (from the caroline-jen.com name using a DNS
server), and the mail server name using the MX record. Bingo - all of a
sudden your james installation will start receiving and messages.

You can read all about this at the following link (you may want to find
out about dynamic IPmanagement whiule your their if your running on a
dialup connection).

James Is Up And Running; But, More Questions

Posted by Caroline Jen <ji...@yahoo.com>.
Hi, Steve and Noel:

Thanks to both of you for helping me. I made a
entirely fresh start and James is up and running now.

At this point, I have two questions:

First, the command to add users to James is
       adduser <user> <password>

The instruction seems to be for UNIX users.
The instruction says that after entering the
values of the administrator userid and
password, you are logged in and you can start
       adding users.

I am not connected to UNIX. I am using my
home PC. What should I do?

Second, Steve, you said that "in order to receive
messages sent from your Yahoo account, you
need to publish the host name of the machine
under an MX record (see README for details
        about MX and name servers)."

The server name is 'localhost' and the IP
        address is 127.0.0.1
I opened all the README files in the James
folder, I do not see the instruction on
publishing the host name of the machine or
about MX. Would you be more specific about
        it? Thank you.

-Caroline

Re: Please Help!!! Cannot Start james

Posted by Stephen McConnell <mc...@apache.org>.
Go to: http://jakarta.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi
About half way down the page you will see a download link for Apache James.
That version worked fine for me.
Cheers, Steve.

Delete the entire directory tree and start over. James does not overwrite
your existing configuration.
