Previous discussions regarding this topic suggested that we could use Mylyn [1] (previously known as Mylar) as an abstraction layer. Unfortunately the release version of Mylyn (2.0) requires JRE 5.0 to run. This is a show stopper for Maven since all plugins distributed from the Maven project has to be able to run on JRE 1.4.
