improving log4j SMTPAppender

Hello,
I recently submitted two patches for the log4j SMTPAppender class:

I'd like to see these changes integrated into the next log4j release.

I am already an Apache committer (sullis@apache.org).   Can I get commit
privileges for the log4j project?
